The author’s Anglo-Indian mother, Pearl, wrote a regular Times of India newspaper column in the 1940s, and unexpectedly fell in love with a brilliant pianist on leave from fighting the Japanese in the jungles of Burma. In a career change the author, a social researcher, launched a textile and clothing business based in Delhi.

Pearl’s descriptions of her life, and the discovery of touching love letters, are interwoven with the author’s experiences over two decades of working in this sometimes difficult but always fascinating country.
